How Much Do I Budget for Wedding Invitations?

Weddings all come down to budget and where to spend it. Invitations are a tricky one to estimate for, because they can vary so widely in cost, based on their style and where they’re from.

After some research I find my services tend to land in between popular invitation sites (ie. Minted, Etsy and etc) and commercial print shops (ie. Vista Print, Kinkos and etc), which is where I love to be! I’m a one-stop-shop, with design, print and accessories, so couples get everything they need easily and moderately priced. Today, I have made a breakdown of the average cost of most popular invitation set ups.

1) We will be basing cost on the average wedding size of 150 guests.
2) Remember, totals below are averages and not exact costs for any client.
3) Design service, taxes and shipping are not included in these averages.
4) Most all the set ups have cost efficient alternatives.

Let’s get started with the most sought-after styles:

1) FLAT INVITATIONS WITH MATS, BELLY BANDS, MONOGRAM & COLORED ENVELOPES.

It’s understandable why this look is so loved. The little details make the invitations “pop,” and give all the little pieces some organization.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS LOOK:
– Printed Invitation
– Printed RSVP
– Printed Monogram
– Mats
– Belly Bands
– Mailing Envelopes

Budget friendly comparison: Remove invitation mats, monogram mats and\or monograms to help cut out some costs, while still getting the over all function & look.

2) DOUBLE-SIDED FLAT INVITATION WITH COLORED ENVELOPES

Next on the popularity scale, is a more simplistic version of that above. This set up gives some added accents with colored envelopes, but certainly takes out the additional costs of extra accessories.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS LOOK:
– Printed Double-Sided Invitation
– Colored Envelopes

Average Cost: $140.00
Add-on: Printed RSVP Card ($47.00). RSVP Envelopes ($32.00). Creative Edge Invitations ($85.00)
Budget friendly comparison: Switch to a standard, white envelope, or if your info can be summarized, switch to a one-sided invitation.

3) TRI-FOLD POCKET INVITATIONS AND ACCESSORIES

Pockets are a more traditional style. Despite their formal and orderly look, they are not seen as often anymore. Along with couples moving to a more modern feel, pocket envelopes can be quite costly when compared to other set ups. However, when couples budget for them, they really love their organization and stunning appearance!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS LOOK:
– Printed Invitations
– Printed RSVP’s
– One, Printed Detail Cards
– Printed Monogram
– Colored Pocket Envelopes (Laser Design included in the average here, but optional.)
– Colored Mailing Envelopes
– Colored RSVP Envelopes

Average Cost: $1,095.00
Add-on: Invitation Mats ($50.00). Creative Edge Invitations ($105.00)
Budget friendly comparison: Choose a simple laser design or plain edge for pockets. Remove monogram mats and\or monograms. Remove belly bands.

4) FOLDING INVITATIONS AND COLORED ENVELOPES

One of the more modern looks is a folding invitation. Perfect for adding photos and simplifying your stationary by having all your info on one printed piece.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THIS LOOK:

– Printed Folding Invitations
– Colored Mailing Envelopes (no color liner included in the average.)

Average Cost: $289.00
Add-on: Belly Bands ($25.00). Color Lined envelopes, like pictured above ($96.00). Monogram ($33.00). Monogram Mats ($20.00)
Budget friendly comparison: N\A, Since there is only one piece to the actual invitation, other than avoiding accessories, these invitations are at their base cost.

 

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Clients should also keep in mind how much time they want to put into their stationary. While all invitations require some “assembly,” some set ups will take longer than others. For example…

Option 1, will require attaching the invitation to a mat, wrapping belly bands around the whole set and securing. Plus, attaching monograms and monogram mats to the belly band. Ending with stuffing and addressing envelopes. On the other hand, Option 2 will be a very simple process of slipping 1, 5×7″ invitation (and options RSVP sets) into the envelope and addressing them.

While no assembly is complicated, clients may want to decide if they have time to do some of the required additional steps that accessories bring.

Kevin and Jamie Tie the Knot in Historic Fort Collins Loft.

You’ll have to call me a bit bias, but my sister and brother-in-law’s wedding was the absolute perfect nuptials to start my 2018. And only for my sister would I agree to shoot and be a part of a wedding at the same time. (Let me tell you about challenges!!)

So first, a special thank you to Jesse of Jesse Ramirez Photography, for capturing the other half of the wedding you won’t see here. Without his amazing help, I wouldn’t have been able to put a personal touch to their special day.


Moving from Colorado I can be one of the first to tell you its beautiful in the winter. Just put yourself there during Christmas and the New Year. Downtown is lined with twinkly white lights in all the trees, on every street. If you’re lucky enough to see a Colorado snow, it certainly is breathtaking when paired with the general splendor.

The venue was a historic loft tucked in downtown Fort Collins. Exposed brick walls, wood floors, vintage tile, and a 100-year old bar made this location the perfect place for Kevin and Jamie to tie the knot.

The quaint size of this space left Kevin and his best man to spruce up just next door to where Jamie was finally able to slip into her stunningly elegant gown; Buttons trailing down the back and gorgeous lace patterns covering the dress.

Before the ceremony, we planned our father’s first look on the beautiful two story balcony overlooking the city. And as any father looking at his little girl in a wedding dress, his reaction did not disappoint!

Afterwards it was time to “hurry up, and wait.” To slip the rings back into their boxes, finish our touch-ups,  get everyone into place, and wait.

Lanterns lined the aisle with a deep purple, green and grey color scheme. A beautiful arch filled with greenery, plum flowers and hanging candles awaits at the end of the aisle. Along with a more-than-ready groom. Immediate family of the couple look on as the wedding party of two, best man and maid of honor, make an entrance. Smiles all widen as Jamie finally makes her way down the aisle accompanied by her dad.

Before we know it, this small, intimate ceremony comes to an end and two are finally one.

The celebration begins with drinks and cake cutting under the stunning, historic bar. Followed by the new Mr. & Mrs. dancing the night away to the classic love song of “At Last” by Etta James.

As guests enjoy the party, and the evening comes to a close, Mr. & Mrs. Boyer are met by a beautiful white horse and carriage. The carriage ride trots them downtown through the glittery, light filled streets, to their suite… and well, happily ever after, of course. 🙂

4 Mistakes to Avoid with your Wedding Photography.

Photography is a huge portion of your wedding day. Not only does it document your union for literally forever, but it can have a ripple effect on how smooth other parts of your day goes. Here are a few common mistakes to avoid:

1. DO SOME RESEARCH.
Before hiring your photographer do some research. It’s so easy to use the same guy as your best friend, or to ask your neighbor’s cousin, but hiring them before you’ve done your homework is a huge, common mistake.

Check out their work, their reviews and their company policies. Make sure you love their style of photography, that they seem organized and helpful. If “too many questions” annoy them, they’re not the right choice. If they can’t be helpful before your wedding day, they likely won’t be helpful the day of.

Do they seem to play well with others? Ask yourself it they’ll be sociable and easy to talk to for your guests, party, family, officiant or even other services, like a videographer??

If they’re not helpful, organized or easy to talk to it is a BIG deal. Ninety-nine percent of the time the photography schedule (and photographer) runs the show. Usually because your time with them is limited. So when choosing, make sure you feel comfortable with how they work.

 

2. HAVE A CONSULT.
One of my requirements with engaged couples is to have at least one consult. Whether your photographer requires it or not, consults with them should be high on your list. If they won’t do a consult with you – red flag!

When I sit down with a couple before their wedding I can discuss the “who, what, when and where.” We’ll cover little details, photo options, and even a timeline of the day. This gives couples a general timeline beforehand, plus allows you to make sure you’ve allotted enough time to do what you wanted with your photos. All of which will take SO much stress and concern off of you!

3. GIVE YOURSELVES SOME “WIGGLE ROOM” WITH TIME.
I can’t stress this tip enough. You can be the most organized person in the universe and it won’t matter. (Sorry!) But there are always going to be portions of your day that won’t go as quickly or as perfect as you planned.

Maybe your best man is MIA every time it’s time for photos, there’s a delay in getting ready, a flat tire on the way to the church happens —SOMETHING. There’s always something that is likely to put at least a small delay in your photo time. Instead of letting it stress you, it’s better to just plan for a little extra time ahead of time. (ie. If you think 6 hours will cover it perfectly – book 7 hours.)

Not to mention, who wants to rush through their wedding day just to accomodate their time with their photographer? It’s suppose to be about you and your guests! In the grand scheme of things, a little extra money for an added hour or what-have you, will be 150% worth it.

4. DON’T SKIP YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION
Skip the excuses instead, because the engagement session is about more than just getting a few photos together…

This session gives you a one-on-one opportunity to work with your partner in front of the camera, and to see how your photographer works with you. When you reach the wedding day it’s going to help you relax when suddenly the spotlight is on you, in front of everyone.

Plus, having professional images will come in very handy for save the dates, invitations and making displays at the wedding.

Trust me! This is not a formality to skip. In fact, it’s why I add a totally free engagement session with all my wedding collections. It’s THAT important.

What You’re Really Paying for at my Photo Sessions.

As a photographer, when I began designing my photo collections I thought to myself, “How can I give my clients exactly what they need and still run my business effectively?” After all, there are about 100 different ways photographic artist conduct business.

Really, once I considered what was important to myself when it came to my personal photos, it didn’t take long to decide what I wanted to do. My business philosophy basically boiled down to this:

“I want to be paid for my time, and creative skill rather than forcing clients to purchase expensive prints that can’t be saved or backed-up.”

That seemed to make the most sense, while still being fair to both myself and my clients. Not to mention, it’s literally how almost every other service functions – pay for service and materials then receive the result.

Now, of course there are exceptions to every rule. For instance, boudoir portraits. Only professional labs will print these types of photos. (( Besides, who really wants to print their own flirty photos while the photo associate is silently judging you? HA HA! )) Then there are also occasional mini sessions I require some sore of product purchase, because it’s too difficult to put a price on such short sessions, where only one photo or two photos would be the ideal outcome.

But I digress. When it came to choosing between a USB of photos, or print orders for my regular sessions the first “pro” was clients being able to back-up their professionally captured memories. I thought about the thousands (yes, thousands) of photos I have being lost in a freak disaster: fire, flood, tech failure and etc… I would be completely devastated. So why put my clients at the same risk with their most important life events?

Plus, by providing a USB, I can deliver photos to clients much faster, and have time to offer some totally rad photo products that are much harder to find than regular prints. The only thing I require in return with my Print and Publish release is this:

“The photos are still legally copyrighted to me, and should therefore never be altered other than sizing. In addition, when posting online add my photo credits {ie. Photos by…} to your post\description or even tag my business page.”

My work is my passion and my biggest form of advertisement. So all I ask is please give credit where credit is due.

How To Get Ready for a Boudoir Shoot.

Your wedding, anniversary, or even the mid-term of your pregnancy is around the corner and you’ve decide to do something bold – a boudoir shoot. Now the session is creeping up, and let’s face it, most of us don’t do these types of shoots on the regular. So what the heck do you do now to make the most of it all!?

BE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR SKIN.

Boudoir doesn’t mean you have to find the tiniest piece of lingerie known to man (unless of course you want to!) because there’s really a lot of options. Plus, just like our everyday clothing, there will be things you feel more (comfortable) and sexy in than others. So here’s a few options for your boudoir outfits:

  • Bra/Bralette & Panty Set
  • Corset or Bustier & Panty
  • Babydoll or Teddy & Panty
  • A Button-up Shirt & Matching Panty
  • Sport jersey & Matching Panty

Panties could be boy shorts, cheekies, thongs, or even g-strings depending upon your personal preference, or what works best with the top.

 

GLAM IT UP!

Your look doesn’t stop at the lingerie (or lack there of.) Don’t forget to accessorize just like you would for any other shoot, but on a whole new level!

  • Chunky or long, fancy, fun necklaces
  • Long string of pearls or long plain necklace
  • Body Jewelry: Body chains, arm bands and etc.
  • High Heels – sexy black, colorful, printed or ones full of character
  • Brides – bring your veil and special wedding day/night lingerie.
  • Lingerie accent pieces: hosiery, garters, garter belts and etc.

HAIR & MAKE UP.

Consider taking your make up look to the next level. Doing so can help really accentuate your best features.

  • Bold, Dramatic & Defined Eyes
  • False Lashes
  • Lipstick – Fun, contrasted colors will really pop!
  • Body Glitter – to give you a little extra glow and shine
  • Hair loose and down – whether curled or straightened – looks super sexy!

Whatever you choose to do, especially if it’s new to you, be sure to practice it ahead of time. One, to make sure you really love it, and two, because there’s nothing more time consuming than applying your cosmetics only to remove them and try again.


Lastly, remember to relax! Boudoir sessions should be sassy, sexy AND fun. You are beautiful, so be confident and your images will reflect how you feel. Clients may even decide to theme their shoot: Pin-up, Classy retro, Rockabilly, Wedding, Girly, Dark & Seductive and so much more! Don’t forget to be strategic in your session scheduling if you’re trying to make it a surprise for your other half.

Should I “DIY” my Wedding Invitations?

As couples work through their list of wedding plans, they often find it necessary to pick out certain items and projects to tackle on their own. Understandably. Perhaps because they can’t find what they’re looking for, or more so, because after awhile it becomes WAY too expensive to purchase every little thing “ready-made.”

So what about your wedding invitations and stationary?

As a graphic designer, I work with bride and grooms all the time who come in wondering about professional invitations vs the process of DIY. Because I’m a designer AND a crafty person ((who LOVES to DIY)) I can usually help them sort the pros and cons pretty quickly. This short blog is the process I go through with my clients to hopefully help YOU decide your best option, as well!

SCHEDULES.
The very first question I ask couples is what their weekly schedules are like. If you’re someone with a full time job, lots of hobbies and\or a busy home life then “DIY invitations” are likely not for you. Like starting anything from scratch, it takes up a ridiculous amount of time. So if you can’t do the time, don’t do the craft!

TIMELINE.
Even with a light – moderate schedule it’s important to consider the amount of time you have before you need to SEND your invites. Typically invitations should be to your recipients no later than 3 months before your actual event. Decide if the amount of invitations you can get done {daily\weekly\monthly} will produce the amount you need and still be done in time to mail.

If you only have a few months to produce 100+ invitations it’s probably best to leave the designing and printing to the pros, and focus your attention on other details. That close to the wedding it’ll be nice to have extra time for “emergency planning” situations that may arise, instead of still worrying about such an important aspect of your event.

QUANTITY.
Before I start any craft, I like to consider my attention span and patience. If you need more than 100 invitations ((plus RSVPs, ceremony programs, or additional stationary for wedding info)) the process of creating them is going to become monotonous, boring and even frustrating. Resulting in the potential of your invitations becoming sloppy, in-cohesive, or worse, not done! Save yourself the frustration when the quantities become very high and avoid DIY.

MATERIALS.
Sometimes we like to fool ourselves into believing that DIY is always going to save us a buck. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Buying all the individual materials can quickly stack up your bill! Especially because you’ll want good, “sturdy” materials to keep them together. So the next thing you know you’ve spent $150 on craft items and a new $200 printer, when you could have potentially found a professional option for less than $100 and no hassle.

Before you dive in, list out all the materials you’re going to need to buy to get the job done RIGHT. Not to mention, the real possibility you may make a mistake at some point and have to redo something – requiring extra materials and money. Compare the cost of materials vs. the cost of having them professionally made. The outcome may just answer your question for you.

PERFECTIONISM.
Lastly, I like people to consider how much of a “perfectionist” they are, as well. That sounds silly, but it goes two ways.

One, depending on the style of invitation, it’s reasonable to guess your 80th invitation may not be as perfect, or as exact, as your 1st. Which may just drive your OCD over the edge.

Two, on top of inconsistency, it’s important that your invitations don’t fall apart before your guests get them. Which means no cutting corners when you’re getting burned out, or run out of glue, so you start using tape. If they fall apart, your money’s down the drain and your chairs at the wedding are empty.

In the end it’s a commitment that must get done. If you’re up for the challenge gather as much help as possible and get started as early as possible! If you’re not up for the challenge (IT’S COMPLETELY OK!!) just put the craft scissors down and walk away!

Reminder to Clients Who Receive a USB.

As everyone rushes to prepare for the holidays, including getting ready to share their portraits from Noel Photography and Design, I wanted to leave a friendly reminder to clients who received a USB of their photos this year.

{Most} my sessions include a USB of the edited images, allowing the images to be printed at client’s location of choice, as well as being posted on social media outlets. Why? Because they are YOUR memories and YOUR cherished moments. Therefore, I want you to be able to back them up, re-visit, and share them with everyone you love – without charging an “arm and a leg” to do so.

However, as you print and share the photos, please remember those same images that are your memories are still MY work and MY biggest form of advertisement. Not only do these images belong to me legally, but they have a special part of my heart and soul. My work is my passion. So when I give the photos and release, please remember it’s under these two main conditions:

  • Do not alter the photos in any way, other than scaling (size adjustment.) Creative rights remain with the artist, Noel Photography and Design\Jennifer Noel. Making changes is illegal, but also changes my vision for my work. Again, my photos are my biggest advertisement, and should therefore remain in the manor I chose to deliver them in.
  • Whenever possible, particularly on social media, give textual credit by noting at the end of your posts that the images are © or “Created by” Noel Photography and Design.

 

I desperately want my wonderful clients to continue to have access to their photos. So please help me to keep allowing you to save your professionally captured memories by following these simple terms of the print and publish release.
